Lee Fritz Randolph is noted for his Impressionist landscapes and portraits. Randolph relocated to California in 1913 where he stayed briefly in the Monterey area before settling in San Francisco. In 1917 he began a twenty-five year position as director of the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute).
Randolph’s painting epitomizes the style of early California painters who worked directly from nature, including a bright palette and loose painterly brushwork that showed the influence of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. California Impressionism reached its peak of popularity in the years before the Great Depression, and many of the artists gathered in San Francisco and the Monterey Peninsula.
