Tsunami and Fire, 1855 and 20112011
24 in. x 37 in. (60.96 cm x 93.98 cm)
Joanne Leonard, American, b. 1940
Here, Leonard layers newspaper coverage of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, over a book spread featuring a famous 1855 woodblock print of the Great Edo Earthquake. She fragments the original photographic “truths” by rearranging sequences, layering images in time and space, placing words on and around the images. In doing so Leonard creates an atlas for further study, a geography of identity with uncertain boundaries.
