Gottardo Piazzoni, a key member of the school of Northern California artists in the early 1900s, was a landscape painter, muralist and sculptor. Specializing in landscapes in muted palettes, Piazzoni is one of the most influential Tonalist painters, painting landscapes with an overall cool atmospheric tone that emphasized mood and shadow.
His best-known public works are his mural panels created for the former San Francisco Public Library, The Land and The Sea, which are now permanently installed at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum. This landscape is a full-size study for the final panel of The Sea, and showcases Piazzoni’s reductive approach to painting, harmonious use of color, and elegant simplicity. He usually relied on only a few elements in his pieces—the earth, sea, and sky, and used figures sparingly.
