Pae White is a contemporary American artist that creates large-scale, mixed-media installations concerned with shifting associations of familiar objects. White has said of her work, “my practice has focused on an exploration of the neglected, the forgotten, the spaces between things, even the things between things. I am equally drawn to the temporary, the fleeting, to the ephemera of everyday life.”
The exterior of each nesting bowl echoes a grinding stone carved into a large granite rock on the banks of the Yuba River. The stone cavities were created by the Maidu, a tribe of Indigenous peoples, and were used to grind acorns and seeds. The inside of each bowl is smooth, an indication of the fingers that pressed each bowl into form. The combination of exterior and interior introduces a conversation by the artist on the Californian landscape, the people who have known it, and the complicated history of occupation.
