Maurice Braun was known for his Impressionist landscapes of Southern California. Braun began his professional career in New York City as a figure and portrait painter, although he soon found this style of painting to be artistically limiting. California’s burgeoning art scene, pristine environment and active Theosophical Society lured him to the West Coast. Braun embraced the ideals of the Theosophists, particularly the group’s use of light as a metaphor for true vision. In Mesa Grande, Braun depicts a spectacular Southern California vista and prioritizes the region’s unmistakable light. Often returning to similar scenes to capture subtle changes in light and atmosphere, Braun paints a transcendent image that transmits the mood of nature rather than the fine details of the landscape. Braun remains one of California’s most important early painters.
