Hill and Adamson were pioneering 19th-century photographers, who were among the first to use the medium in a meaningful artistic manner. This photogravure was printed posthumously by James Craig Annan and was later reproduced in Alfred Stieglitz's photographic journal Camera Work (1903-1917). Over time, the portfolios were broken up and the prints sold individually.
