Carrie Hott
American, b. Early 21st Century
Carrie Hott is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Oakland, California. Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, she grew up in Phoenix and received her B.F.A. from Arizona State University in 2003 before moving to the bay area where she received her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007. A lifelong interest in history and the symbolic power of objects informs her work, which entails a variety of media including painting, drawing, installation, and printmaking. Through her practice, Hott works to find origins, connect tangents, and locate invisible histories. Current preoccupations include the study of the development of artificial light and multiple forms of blackouts, topics reached by way of a long term investigation into whales. In addition to her material practice, she regularly completes related projects that include mixed media presentations, classes, tours, and various collaborative endeavors. In 2009, with artist Elizabeth Bernstein, Carrie Hott co-founded the Royal NoneSuch Gallery, in Oakland, CA, an alternative art and community event space. In 2013, she co-founded a long-distance collaborative space in Queens, NY with 7 artists called Ortega y Gasset Projects. Hott was a 2016 Artist in Residence at Mills College.
