Courtney Allen (1896-1969) was a noted book and magazine illustrator based in New Rochelle, New York. His first work of art was purchased by the newspaper of his hometown in Norfolk, VA when he was eleven years old. This encouragement set him on his career path, which began with study at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and in Provincetown at the Cape Cod School with Charles Hawthorne. World War II interrupted his education. He spent a year in Francie in the Camouflage Section and on the front lines. Returning to America, he spent time at the Holloran Hospital on Staten Island doing portraits of servicemen.
