Tôtarô Sakuma
Japanese,
(1900–1976)
Sakuma was mentored by Living National Treasure, Shoji Hamada (1894 - 1977) and was one of the leading Mashiko potters in the Mingei movement. He learned to use the glazes that Hamada had perfected with Bernard Leach while in St Ives, England. His quiet and reserved work gained him significant notoriety in Japan but he is still little known in the West.
