Sven Atema
American, b. 1969
Sven Atema graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz with a BFA, having done extensive study in Kenya and Ethiopia. His work is primarily done on wood panel using a wide array of pigments, binders, inks, gold/silver/aluminum leaf, liquid acrylics, in a multi-layered and fluid method developed over years of experimentation. The ocean is a pivotal point of reference in Atema’s paintings, drawings and sculptures. The close scrutiny of nature and our relationship to it is a thread that connects nearly all of his work. He has developed over the years a host of characters and forms that help to convey these ideas/observations. They have become the building blocks of a unique visual language.
