Marjory Bridge Farquhar

American, (1904–1999)
Marjory Bridge Farquhar was a pioneering mountaineer and a longtime conservationist whose husband was president of the Sierra Club. In 1934, when the techniques of roped climbing were new, Mrs. Farquhar became the first woman to climb the Higher Cathedral Spire in Yosemite. In 1936, she became the first woman to ascend the east face of Mount Whitney--the highest peak in the continental United States. Friends with Ansel Adams, Farquhar was a professional photographer for many years. She also made films of her climbing expeditions, including her landmark trip up Mount Whitney.
