William Gaw was born in San Francisco and painted coastal landscapes inspired by his local surroundings. He experimented with both Cubist and Post-Impressionist art forms, and he was very interested in the science of color, often incorporating bright, complementary hues. His depiction of high tide captures the rugged and rocky beauty of the northern Pacific coastline. During his lifetime, Gaw was an influential teacher in the Bay Area and served as Chairman of the Art department at Mills College between 1942 and 1957.
