Northern California artist Clark Hobart was a noted painter of landscapes and portraits. In 1916 he established his studio in San Francisco, where he built a successful portrait practice and continued to paint landscapes. Up Carmel Valley showcases the influence of French Impressionist painting on Hobart’s technique, building form through small, visible brush strokes and emphasizing the accurate depiction of light and its changing qualities.
