Henrietta Berk was a painter in the San Francisco Bay Area whose work was part of the Bay Area figurative movement of the mid-20th century. These artists worked with a range of subject matter, from local landscapes to portraits, often in reaction to the dominance of Abstract Expressionist painting in the United States after World War II. The movement was also associated with the rise of beat culture and West Coast jazz in San Francisco.
Berk’s oil paintings were noted for their strong colors and shapes, as well as her expressionist brushwork. California Vineyard is an abstracted depiction of Napa vineyards, with strong contrasting colors and the suggestion of land being prepared for planting. Berk is one of the few women artists associated with Bay Area figuration.
