Sylvia Sleigh’s portraits from the 1960s and 1970s often focus on the issue of gender equality. She painted a series of works reversing stereotypical artistic themes by featuring men in poses usually associated with women or depicting men and women as equals. Painted in Sleigh’s sitting room at West 20th Street in New York City, this painting depicts Susana Delgado, a noted print-maker from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lawrence Alloway, Sleigh’s husband who was an art critic and senior curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
