Gertrude Partington Albright was a British-born American artist known for her portraiture, etchings, and Cubist-inspired California landscape oil paintings. Her works capture both the dense urban landscape of San Francisco as well as the natural beauty surrounding the city. Albright studied painting and etching in Paris in the 1890s and was familiar with the work of Post-Impressionist French painter Paul Cezanne. When she returned to the Bay Area in 1912, she played an important role as a faculty member for nearly thirty years at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Arts Institute). She adopted a more modernist aesthetic in her work, using a vivid color palette and more linear forms and structures in the mid-1920s.
