Washoe coiled basket

early 20th Century
20th Century
4 1/4 in. x 9 in. (10.8 cm x 22.86 cm)

Native American, Native American

Object Type: Baskets
Creation Place: North America, United States
Medium and Support: 2-3 types of plant fiber
Credit Line: Gift of Laurette Schorcht in honor of Doris Dennison, Music Director, Dance Dept. 1939-1972
Accession Number: 2005.132
Materials: 2-3 different kinds of plant material, something for the coils forming the structure and another couple for the weft coiled around those rods. Unsure what plants specifically.

Technique: Coiled basket, not twined.

Structure: Very strong and well woven. It’s probably a bowl/storage of some kind because it’s so smooth on the interior, but it doesn’t seem as watertight for a bowl.

Cultural affiliation notes: I don’t think this is Hupa, Yurok, or Karuk, and maybe not even Northern CA? The weave and materials aren’t really right for the coastal areas.
