Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. In her work she investigates issues of economies and empire, exploring how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of racialized, exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. She is an associate professor in art practice at the University of California, Berkeley and resides in Oakland.

Syjuco states of her work, “I seek to physically blur the boundaries, to create a synthesis of fact and fiction, in order to ask: what would this intersection—this new territory—look like?” Here, what looks like vintage natural history studies turns out to be images of computer and technological cords and peripherals, each slightly manipulated to take on organic characteristics—a fused or sprouting growth from a stem, a radial symmetry.
