Kara Maria is an American painter and mixed media artist currently working and living in San Francisco, California. She received her MFA in art practice from the University of California, Berkeley. Maria employs elements of contemporary painting–blending geometric shapes and abstract representation–in her artwork to address political issues concerning feminism, environmental conservation, and war.

Divergence #1 takes its inspiration from camouflage patterns found in nature and the vibrantly colored Mexican papel picado, made by cutting elaborate shapes and scenes into sheets of tissue paper and stringing them together like garland. Maria’s birds resemble tissue paper cut-outs and their quantity and diversity both celebrate nature and remind us of what we have lost and continue to lose due to extinction caused by human activity.
