Kathryn Spence is a Bay Area artist that uses found urban detritus to meticulously recreate wildlife and natural environments. Her carefully crafted objects and arrangements develop out of play and an ongoing fascination with materiality, physicality, and space. Time spent outside watching birds, exploring, and planting have influenced her work, which points to human impact on the natural world and opens up dialogue about hoarding, consumerism, and recycling. Rather than bringing more objects into the world, she takes apart and reorganizes non-precious, conventionally wasted materials to ask questions about what is sufficient. Spence received her MFA from Mills College.
