William Seltzer Rice was a woodblock print artist, art educator and author, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in Northern California. In 1915, he was exposed to Japanese woodblock prints at the Panama Pacific International exposition, which impressed him deeply and changed the course of his future work. A talented and prolific watercolorist, Rice became devoted to block printing because the medium was better suited to the Arts and Crafts ethos of making artwork available to a wide audience at modest cost. Unlike many printmakers, Rice designed, carved, and printed the blocks himself. The landscape of Northern California, from Lake Tahoe to the Pacific, proved excellent raw material for his creativity.
