Ralph Du Casse’s early paintings range from loose, gestural abstraction to a predominantly linear style rooted in Cubism and resembling the early work of Richard Diebenkorn. His paintings of the 1960s and 1970s were dominated by simpler, thinly stained abstract forms with sources in Asian philosophy, although some bordered on figuration.
This untitled work on paper highlights these influences, capturing an abstracted mountain landscape with expressionist line work and bold, graphic colors. Du Casse was an important Bay Area educator, and during the 1970s he served as chairman of the art department at Mills College.
