Kikuo Kawaguchi was born in Odawara City, Japan, part of the Greater Tokyo Area. He began his career in fine arts modeling and production for art museums, and is best known for his “silhouette objects” made by etching nickel silver plates to create silhouettes of people, animals, bicycles, and other objects.

The diminutive size of Kawaguchi’s Untitled (small electrical tower) stands in playful opposition the outsized space taken up by electrical towers and overhead power lines across the Tokyo landscape. Power lines are so entrenched in Japan’s landscape that they have become a prime subject for many artists.
