Ray Boynton is most well-known for his mural work in California during the Great Depression. He participated in the mural projects at Coit Tower in San Francisco and in the mid-1920s he traveled to Mexico City to study with muralist Diego Rivera. His firsthand instruction from Rivera helped Boynton earn the commission for producing murals located in Mills College's Littlefield Concert Hall. Mount Tamalpais, in Marin County, has been a common subject of California landscape painting, depicted by artists such as 19th century painters William Keith and Jules Tavernier. Boynton embraced a modernist style in his painting of Mount Tamalpais that was popular in Northern California during the 1920s.
