Pirkle Jones was an American documentary photographer known for his poignant photographs that capture the people and landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area during a time of enormous social, political, and environmental change. His works include photographic essays that chronicled the Black Panther Party as well as the displacement of residents of Monticello, California after it was submerged at the bottom of Lake Berryessa after the completion of the Monticello Dam.
Jones attended the first photography class offered by the California School of Fine Arts. It was there that he was connected with photographer Dorothea Lange, along with such artists as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Jones became close friends with Adams and worked as his assistant for six years.
