Eugen Neuhaus was a plein air painter and important member of the artists’ colony established in the early part of the 20th century on the Monterey Peninsula. Few regions rival the peninsula’s physical magnificence. This beauty, together with a mild climate, rich history, and simplicity of lifestyle, encouraged the development of one of the nation’s foremost art colonies. From 1875 to the first years of the twentieth century, artists such as Neuhaus were drawn to the towns of Monterey, Pacific Grave, and Carmel. Neuhaus had an influential teaching career and was a lecturer on history, theory, and practice of art in Mills College, from 1918 to1928.
