Misako Inaoka is a Japanese mixed-media visual artist currently living and working in her birth city of Kyoto, Japan. She received her MFA from Mills College.

Inaoka’s mixed-media sculptures center around the relationship between the natural world and the artificial, taking form in her own versions of hybridized creatures and landscapes. Her work is informed by the peculiarities of a nature that survives by adapting, adjusting, and mutating to its new urban setting—tree branches intertwining with a chain link fence, wild animals thriving in man-made parks, moss growing in a crack in the cement sidewalk. Inaoka emphasizes these subtle details and exaggerates their illogicality to cultivate her own invented creatures. It is not a creation of total imagination but a projection of reality in an absurd form.
