Cross Section: Recent Acquisitions showcases recently acquired pieces in dialogue with artwork from MCAM’s permanent collection. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of the Museum’s holdings, featuring a range of media from painting, video, and photography to sculpture and works on paper and contextualizes new acquisitions of work by Binh Danh, Judy Chicago, Joanne Leonard, Mika Rottenberg, Sylvia Sleigh, Allison Smith, Kathryn Spence, Carrie Mae Weems, and Pae White, among others, with the works in the collection by artists such as Ansel Adams, Joseph Breitenbach, Sam Easterson, Olafur Eliasson, and Mona Hatoum.

Cross Section: Recent Acquisitions explores multiple themes, including artistic ideas surrounding gender, race, and cultural identity; the politics of war, featuring examples from World War II to the present; and environmental change, from late 19th century landscape photographs to contemporary examinations of urban impact. With over 10,000 works of art from a diverse range of cultures and time periods, MCAM’s collection spans centuries of art-making practices, from the first century BC to the present, with significant holdings of prints and drawings, photography, ceramics, textiles, and early
20th-century California painting. The museum continually seeks to enhance its strengths as well as expand the representation of contemporary artistic practices in its collection.

Cross Section: Recent Acquisitions features 128 works by 63 artists including Ansel Adams, Sybil Anikeyev, William M.
