Ron Nagle

American, b. 1939
Ron Nagle (born February 21, 1939) is an American sculptor known for his small-scale, boldly colorful, surrealist sculptures. His intimately-sized ceramic sculptures often meld various materials and techniques including hand-molding, slip-casting, airbrushing, wax, scalp-metal, and both traditional and nontraditional glazing methods. Nagle’s finished pieces are dream-like in appearance, generally nonfigurative, and ornamented with brilliant colors. Nagle is associated with the California Clay Movement and Abstract Expressionist Ceramics.

Born in San Francisco, Nagle was introduced to ceramics by his mother at a young age and practiced with the medium throughout high school. In 1961, Nagle graduated from San Francisco State College with a BFA and a focus in ceramics. He then went onto teach ceramics at the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts, and the University of California Berkeley between the years of 1961 and 1978, eventually beginning a professorship at Mills College where he taught ceramics for over thirty years.
