Rashid Johnson

American, b. 1977
Rashid Johnson (born 1977 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American photographer, sculptor, and installation artist whose practice is defined by its critical evocations and entangling of racial and cultural identity and mysticism. His work ranges from two- and three-dimensional objects, installations, videos, and performances. Johnson is known for his conceptual post-Black art that combines various aspects of science—such as alchemy, divination, and astronomy—with Black history. In addition to experimental photography, Johnson frequently incorporates a variety of sculptural and painterly traditions into his work.

Johnson has studied at both Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has been the subject of solo exhibitions around the world. Johnson currently lives and works in New York.
