Jessie Dorr
American,
(1877–1978)
Jessie Dorr was born in San Francisco, CA on Oct. 19, 1877 and graduated from Mills College in Oakland in 1897. She then studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Gottardo Piazzoni. After the 1906 earthquake, she studied for two years in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts and in Munich. Upon her return, she established a studio in the "Monkey Block" (now the site of the Transamerica Bldg). Her works were considered modern by the standards of 1916. Because of a bad review, she burned all of the works she still owned in 1916 and abandoned painting.
