Jack Youngerman

American, b. 1926
Jack Youngerman is an American artist known for his abstract paintings of simplified organic forms. Influenced by contemporaries such as Ellsworth Kelly as well as the cut-outs of Henri Matisse, Youngerman explores figure-and-ground relationships through juxtaposing colored shapes. “The whole primary thing I work with in my paintings is an exploration and articulation of all the possibilities of abstract shape,” he has explained. Born on March 25, 1926 in Saint Louis, MI, he grew up in Louisville, KY, and later studied art at the University of North Carolina while also in a training program for the US Navy. In 1947, Youngerman traveled to Paris, where he attended classes at the École des Beaux-Arts and met Ellsworth Kelly, with whom he formed a long-lasting friendship. During his time in Europe, Youngerman was introduced to the works of Pierre Alechinsky and Jean Arp which furthered his interest in stylizing natural forms and provided an alternative to Abstract Expressionism. Returning to New York in 1956, he established himself a studio together with Kelly, Barnett Newman, and Agnes Martin. In the decades that followed, he has had a number of acclaimed exhibitions both in the United States and abroad. The artist currently lives and works in Bridgehampton, NY.
