Hugh Hope

American, b. 1944
Hugh Hope is a California native, born and raised near Eureka, Humboldt County. Hugh attended Humboldt State College in the early 1960s, where he became involved with pottery under the guidance of Prof. Resse Bullen. After graduating with a BA in Art in 1965, Hugh entered graduate school at Mills College, studying with Antonio Prieto, where he received his MFA in Ceramics in 1967. He draws influence from a variety of ceramic traditions including The California Clay Movement lead by Peter Voulkos in the 1950s, as well as traditional Japanese earthenware techniques.
