Gagyû Yokoishi graduated from Arita Technical School, and started studying under his father Soun at the age of 14. He exhibited at the Nagasaki Prefectural Exhibition for the first time in 1955 and won the Governor’s Award. He specialized in recreating the Utsutsugawa-ware style from the late 17th to early 18th centuries with the full support of Uemura Fujio, the leading pioneer of collecting ancient Utsutsugawa ware.
