James Bradley Barnaby, aka Santiago Barnaby, attended California College of the Arts in Oakland as an undergraduate to study ceramics under Vernon "Corky" Coykendall and Viola Frey. During this time he expanded his scope of ceramic art into the realm of sculpture to include more conceptual themes. His formal education continued at Central Washington University, returning to receive his master's degree in sculpture in 1970, exploring further into other materials and themes. He then entered the prestigious master's program in sculpture at Mills College where his work evolved to include more environmental issues, receiving his MFA degree in 1973.
